Bachelor's Degree

Specific Admission Requirements

Candidate students who receive the necessary minimum score from the Higher Education Entrance Exam (YGS) take a three-level Special Skills Test. Students who pass the first level can enter the second level of the exam. Students who pass the second level can enter the third level of the exam. After this stage, an Overall Success Score is obtained for each student. Later, students who pass the exam are determined according to Student Selection and Placement System’s (ÖSYS) rules and regulations given under the title “Procedures for Accepting Students in the Programs that Require Special Skills.” There is a 30-student quota each year.

Qualification Requirements

To obtain an undergraduate degree from the Music Education department, students must successfully complete all the credits (240 ECTS) in area studies, educational sciences, and general culture courses with a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Application requirements for undergraduate transfer: Minimum GPA for associate and undergraduate students is 2.00/4.00.

History

The Fine Arts Education Department’s Music Education program was established during the 2001-2002 educational year within the College of Education of Mugla Sitki Kocman University. The Music Education program currently has 8 assistant professors, 7 teaching instructors, 1 teaching instructor Ph.D. and 2 research assistants. Individual instrument training areas in the program are violin, viola, violoncello, double-bass, flute, guitar, kanun, baglama, and voice training. Along with academic studies, it is a principle for our program to organize concerts and activities of Turkish and world music origins throughout the year.

Profile of the Programme

At the beginning of each semester, students register taking classes based on the curriculum. They can take as many classes as they desire without exceeding their semester limit. In addition to that, students can take classes from the forthcoming year depending on their current GPAs. The educational calendar is planned as Fall and Spring. Students have to attend 70 percent of theoretical and 80 percent of practical courses in order to be able to enter the final exams. Every course has a midterm and a final. The overall grade for the course is calculated combining midterm and final grades using a relative assessment system.

Program Outcomes

1- Using the piano and the individual instrument effectively with proper technique, suitable for the requirements of professional music teaching.
2- Using the voice in the principles of vocal education with right technique; achieving the ability of individual and collective singing.
3- Possessing the educational music repertoire and being able to accompany school songs with piano.
4- Being able to play educational music samples with widely used instruments in schools; knowing the physical characteristics of instruments and executing repairment and maintenance of the instruments.
5- Analyzing music from the aspects of kind and form and being equipped in poliphonizing subject.
6- Achieving the ability of musical hearing, reading and writing by comprehending inter-pitch relations.
7- Being equipped about the birth and history of music and era-style properties.
8- Being able to form vocal and instrumental groups, gaining the ability of performing with and conducting these ensembles.
9- Possessing basic knowledge in the field of Traditional Turkish Music and being able to perform traditional pieces in a qualified way.
10- Being qualified in composing educational music and being able to compose simple school songs.
11- Being sufficient in written and oral expression in Turkish and a foreign language, having knowledge on the use of computers and scientific research methods.
12- Acknowledging the Turkish National Education System, teaching profession and field of Education Sciences from all aspects; to know Ataturk's Principles and Revolution.
13- Being equipped in planning-organizing musical activities; and in the subject of music teaching methods and techniques.
14- Being aware of different learning approaches fitting the evolution properties of students.
15- Planning, operating and evaluating a lesson with the help of the information and abilities gained during the program.
16- Comprehending individuals personal, professional, educational and developmental needs and take these into account during applications.

Graduation Requirements

In order to successfully complete the Music Education program, students are required to pass all the courses in the program (honoring 240 ECTS) and to receive a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Students who complete the Music Education program become music teachers and they can work for public or private schools. They can establish private music training schools as well as work for them as teachers. Students can also work in various music business sectors utilizing their musical and pedagogical accumulation.

Access to Further Studies

There are no Masters or PhD programs.
