Faculty of Education Degree Programme in Psychological Counseling and Guidance

Qualification Awarded

This is a first cycle degree program in the science of Psychological Counselling and Guidance (240 ECTS). You will be awarded, on successful completion of the programme and gain competencies, a degree of Bachelor in Psychological Counselling and Guidance.

Specific Admission Requirements

Students must comply with the legal and academic requirements to access the studies in The Sakarya University according to the process established by the ÖSYM (Higher Education Council Student Selection and Placement Centre) regulations. Students who have started studies in other universities within or outside of the country may apply for their recognition. The recognition record is unique for each student and therefore the procedure is carried out accordingly before the start of each academic year. More information about general admission requirements can be found in the catalogue of Information on the Institution. Under an established exchanges program or one approved by the University, exchange students from abroad may be accepted for studies on the courses taught in English. Or, if they are confident in Turkish, they may then enrol any courses, running in Turkish, shown on the ?Course Structure? diagram.

Qualification Requirements

A student is required to complete successfully the designated program of courses meet a minimum of 240 ECTS credit requirement and have a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00 and no FF, FD or TT grades.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Depending on the degrees awarded, theoretical or practical courses taken as part of a degree (completed or not completed) may lead to recognition of these as prior learning by the program administration. The students who have taken courses in another institution in Turkey or abroad can ask for credit and grade transfer. The executive boards of relevant program will decide on the courses to be transferred covering students' entire academic program once and for all with the condition that the request for transfer be made within the first week of the academic year, the requests cannot be repeated.

History

Guidance and Psychological Counseling undergraduate program has been founded in 2011.

Profile of the Programme

The Programme in Guidance and Psychological Counseling is a bachelor's degree programme in the Department of Educational Sciences in the Faculty of Education. Besides the required courses, the programme offers courses related with teaching profession, specialization fields, culture and practice in the field. Students can also take elective courses. The programme has both theoretical and practical components. Theoretical courses are given at technologically-equipped classrooms. Practical courses are offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Education, Provincial Directorate of National Education, and primary and secondary schools under the supervision of a school counselor and mentor. The Programme in Guidance and Counseling was founded in the fall semester of 2005 in order to train counselors that will work at private and public schools, counseling and guidance services of the ministry of education, counseling and guidance departments of universities. The programme has admitted students since the academic year 2011-2012. Every year 80 students are accepted to the programme. The Programme in Guidance and Psychological Counseling is in the Faculty of Education, located at Yunusemre Campus of Anadolu University. The programme has 1 full professor, 2 associate professors, 4 assistant professor. The academic board of the department makes decisions related to the programme. The department academic board consists of the head of department, two deputy heads of department, and heads of programmes.

Program Outcomes

1- To educate students as a Psychological Counseller in direct of the needs of the Turkey.
2- To gain basic scientific research methods and application skills
3- To educate students and to make them as an expert about child, adolescents and geriatric psychology
4- To breed ethics of the Psychological Counseling and Guidance
5- To gain therapeutic ability
6- To instruct students to be an expert in the vocational guidance
7- To instruct students to be an expert in the current theories of Psychological Counseling
8- To instruct students to be an expert in the individual and group counseling
9- To instruct students related to contemporary
10- To get learn students to social construct and psychology
11- To instruct students to be an expert in the student personality services
12- To instruct students to be an expert in the interpersonal relationship.
13- To educate students related to basic theoretic and practice counseling knowledge and skills.
14- Students may communicate with his/her colleague and may follow the literature at least European Language Portfolio B1 level in a foreign language
15- Students may use informatics and communication in advance level on the basis of Europan Computer license.

Graduation Requirements

There is no final examination or examination period at the end of an academic year, or at the end of the study programme. There is, however, a final examination and examination periods, i.e., normally takes two weeks and starts immediately after at the end of each semester. Student is expected to have a successful completion of internship (60 working days) in industry before graduation. Internship is not credited in the programme though it is prerequisite for the graduation. However, the competences gained and workload needed with internship are ensured with the relevant courses` content, practice and worklaod in the programme.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Our graduated students are mostly employed in schools of Ministry of National Education, Education guidance and research centres, private courses, mental health centres, related department of public institutions, department of human research in private sector and psychological information centres of military. Upon a successful completion of the programme, student may also continue with master and doctoral studies in the same or similar scientific areas, which may accept students from the science of Psychological Counselling and Guidance.
