Qualification Awarded

Students that obtain a grade point avarage of minimum 2.00 out of 4.00 and successfully complete all the courses (240 AKTS) within 8 semesters are going to be given molecular biology and genetics undergraduate degree.

Specific Admission Requirements

To have a high school degree and to succeed in the University Entrance Examination by the Student Selection and Placement Center in the Republic of Turkey

Recognition of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning is at the beginning stage in the Turkish Higher Education System. Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University and hence the Department of Molecular Biology and Geenetics is no exception to this. However, exams of exemption are organised at the start of each term at the University for courses compulsory in the curriculum, such as Foreign Languages and Basic Computing. The students who have completed the learning process for these courses on his/her own or through other means, and believe that they have achieved the learning outcomes specified are given the right to take the exemption exam. The students who achieve a passing grade from these exams are held exempt from the related course in the curriculum, and this grade is entered into the transcript of the student.

History

Molecular Biology and Genetics Department in Mugla Sıtkı Koçman University is a newly founded department and undergraduate education programme has began in 2013-2014 academic year.

Profile of the Programme

The undergraduate program aims to equip students with basic knowledge in life sciences with special emphasis on molecular biology and genetics. The education program in the first two years concentrates on basic knowledge in biology, genetics and microbiology in addition to physics, chemistry and mathematics. The last two years are dedicated to a specialized training in molecular biology, molecular cell biology and biotechnology. Theoretical courses are completed with laboratory courses with hands-on experiments.

Program Outcomes

1- Having proficiency in basic life science and bioengineering and ability to use these proficiency in the solution of the problemes related with molecular biology and genetics.
2- Ability to define and solve the problems in molecular biology and genetics area and also having the ability to choose appropriate techniques and analytical methods for the solution of those problems.
3- Ability to analyze components and the progression of a biological system
4- Ability to search the literature and data bases and other information sources to get the required data
5- Ability to work alone or within a team and being self-confident to taking responsibilites.
6- Ability to follow all developments in science and technology and continuously update his/her knowledge
7- Having sense of responsibility
8- Awareness of the results of biotechnologic and biosafety applications.
9- Having knowledge of the problems of new century and also being aware of innovative and developing research areas
10- Being aware of the universal and social effects of biological applications

Midterm Exam and / or Research Project (40%) Final Exam (60%)

Molecular Biology and Genetics Graduates have chance to find positions especially in below-listed fields: 1. Academic career in national / international universities 2. Industries making biotechnology-oriented productions 3. Clinical medicine, forensic science and pharmaceutical industry 4. Production and marketing of required materials in genetical engineering.

Access to Further Studies

There is a master of science programme as Molecular Biology and Genetics, under Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences. Graduate students who has bachelor of science degree in related departments, can apply this programme.
