Specific Admission Requirements

To be accepted as a Ph.D. candidate at Sociology, students are expected to have a master of Arts degree. If graduate student has no Sociology degree at M.A or B.A level, he/she is expected to complete must courses of the related programme. In addition students should have at least 55 points in Academic Gradaute Education Exam. In addition, students should have at least 50 points in any Foreign Language ProficiencyExam.

Qualification Requirements

Thesis Seminar main intention of this course is to provide asistance to students for preparing their proposals and writing their thesis. Special Topics in Dissertation Each Ph.D student should take at least one Special Topics course offered by his/her advisor related with his/her special area of study. Dissertation Each Ph.D student is obliged to prepare a thesis proposal, write a dissertation thesis and defend his/her thesis in front of a thesis jury.

Recognition of Prior Learning

In order to be accepted as a Ph.D candidate, master os Science degree is accepted as crucial. Thus, candidates from another field should complete missing courses of the syllabus for Master's Programme, determined by Commission of the Department.

History

Sociology Department was established in 1993 under Faculty of Science and Literature. First instructor of the department was Research Assistant Muammer Tuna and he went to United States for gradute education. At 1995, Assistant Professors Hurriyet Konyar, Koşar Hız and Nurgün OKTİk were appointed to the department. Asisstant Professor Nurgün Oktik was in the Office of Head of Department between the years 1996-2003. By the year 2004 Asisstant Professor Muammer Tuna became head of the department until 2010. Between February 2011 and June 2011 Asisstant Professor Koşar Hız became head of department. Beginning from 2011 June Prof. Dr. Muammer TUNA became chair of the department and still the chair of department. Sociology department offers Ph.D programme from 2008.

Profile of the Programme

Sociology Ph.D programme provides opportunities to those who would like to continue their education in sociology, after B.A and m.A in Sociology. Programme also offers opportunities to students to establish their own studies on sociology depending upon advanced sociological theories. Ph.D programme also intends to provide students ability of conduucting a sociological research independently and provide academic career at universities and higher education institutions.

Program Outcomes

1- Describes sociological concepts and explains them in a relation
2- Earn sociological imagination and thinking, interpreting social events and facts with sociological imagination models
3- Have sociological knowledge about sociological theoretical models and explaining social world with modern and postmodern sociological theories
4- Establishing a scientific research framework, determining appropriority of thesetechniques and theoretical framework
5- Grasping and realizing relationships between theory technique and technical concepts
6- Having knowledge about social sciences and multi disciplinary approaches and using sociological knowledge in a relationship with sociology, philosopy, anthropology, economics, political science
7- Crticising power relationships in a social life and culturel life and having critical thinking about social problems
8- Using socilogical knowledge in daily life, positioning one self in a critical participatory and democratic attitude
9- İncreasing awareness about human rights, justice, equality, enviranment, gender and cultural values
10- Producing scientific knowledge apart from predujices and othering
11- Analysing dynamics of social change and transformation
12- Paying attention to ethics at scientific researches and at work life and everday life
13- Producing scientific knowledge by using different data techniques and sharing the produced knowledge and a written or oral way
14- Using foreing language for establishing international academic researches and ability to follow academic papers
15- Usingmedia and communication technologies and applying these technologies to ones own academic studies

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

At Ph.D programme, evaluation of the course depends upon instructor of the course. and content of the course. Term papers, presentations, projects are also others techniques of evaluation that are included at the end of the semester.

Graduation Requirements

To receive a Ph.D degree, students should complete 180-240ECTS credits, that will be composed of Specialized Thesis Study, Seminar and minimum 7 must course determined by the Sociology Department. Following the completion of the courses, students should be be successful at Proficiency Exam at Sociology Ph.D Programme. After Proficiency exam, students are expected to submit a thesis proposal. Syudents should write a dissertation that should be authentic and dissertation should be implication of a known theory to a new area or contribution to related literature with a new approach.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Ph.D graduates can have an academic career and work as faculty staff at universities. In addition, at some state institutions Sociology Ph.D Gradutes can be empolyed as experts.

Access to Further Studies

Sociology Ph.D. graduates can work as Instructors of Sociology at related Higher Education Institutions.
