Expert in Master of Arts

Specific Admission Requirements

To be accepted for a Master of Arts programme, students are expected to; a) Have a four year of degree at any undergradute programmes b) For Master of Arts programme with dissertation thesis at least they should get 55 points from Academic Graduate Education Exam

Qualification Requirements

Master of Science students are expected to get at least 180 min. ECTS credits, to give a seminar, to write and defend a Master's Thesis successfully and also to finish all enrolled courses succesfully.

Recognition of Prior Learning

To be eligible for Sociology Master of Arts programme, having a four year- B.A degree is sufficient. However, Department of Sociology, decides to make written or oral exam and accept students to the programme.

History

Sociology Department was established in 1993 under Faculty of Science and Literature. First instructor of the department was Research Assistant Muammer Tuna and he went to United States for gradute education. At 1995, Assistant Professors Hurriyet Konyar, Koşar Hız and Nurgün OKTİk were appointed to the department. Asisstant Professor Nurgün Oktik was in the Office of Head of Department between the years 1996-2003. By the year 2004 Asisstant Professor Muammer Tuna became head of the department until 2010. Between February 2011 and June 2011 Asisstant Professor Koşar Hız became head of department. Beginning from 2011 June Prof. Dr. Muammer TUNA became chair of the department and still the chair of department.

Profile of the Programme

In Master of Arts education, it was intended to establish main theoretical background that academic career requires. In addition, for other sectors apart from academic career, students are intended to be fully educated based on universal researcher requirements.

Program Outcomes

1- To discuss and interpret sociological theories and concepts, and to be able to relate them analytically.
2- To gain certain theoretical and methodological knowledge in his/her fields of interests to guide his/her academical progress.
3- To have advanced knowledge of the theoretical and methodological foundations of sociology, and to be able to explain the social world using classical, modern and/or postmodern theories.
4- To have knowledge about the epistemological origins of scientific research method and techniques in order to be able to design the process of gaining scientific knowledge and to use the relevant techniques.
5- To be able to problematize social facts, and to be able to discuss the necessary sociological approaches on a conceptual level.
6- To have a good grasp of multidisciplinary approach, thereby being able to establish interdisciplinary relations, and using it in relation with other social disciplines like history, philosophy, anthropology, psychology, economy, and political science.
7- To be able to question the power relations that are dispersed within social and cultural life, to have the ability to think critically about social problems.
8- To be able to use sociological knowledge in daily life; to be able to have a critical, participatory and democratic attitude and stance towards social problems.
9- To develop a consciousness and sensitivity towards human rights, social justice, inequality, environment, gender, and cultural values.
10- To be able to produce scientific knowledge that is free from prejudice and othering.
11- To be able to analyze contemporary social facts, social change and mobility.
12- To be able to develop diverse and critical approaches towards social facts in academic life within ethical principles.
13- To be able to produce scientific knowledge using different sources of data; to be able to share the resulting knowledge through text and speech.
14- To be able use one foreign language at least at the B2 level of European Language Portfolio for written and spoken communication.
15- To be able to use information and communication technologies at an advanced level, along with the software necessary for his /her field.

Exam Regulations & Assesment & Grading

To fulfill requirements determined by instructor of the course. Including presentation, class discussion, term papers, mid term and final exams.

Graduation Requirements

To receive master of Arts degree, students should get at least 180 ECTS credits abd succesfully completing 7 courses determined as compulsory by the department, giving a seminar, preparing a proposal, taking a special topics in Dissertation course, wrtiting an academic and scientific dissertation and defending thesis in front of a jury are compulsory.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Gradutes from Department of Sociology may have chance to find jobs at many fields. Graduate students can Work as teachers at High Schools as Philosophy Group teachers. These students should complete required courses in Curriculum to become Philosophy Group teachers. In addition gradute students can work at State Planning Agency, Family Research Institution, Ministry of Family and Social Policy, State Statistics Institution, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interiors, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Food and Agriculture as sociologists. Moreover, graduate students can also work at advertisement, research and media companies, departments of Public Relations and also at banking sector sociology graduate students can be employed.

Access to Further Studies

Master of Arts gradutes have an access to Ph.D programmes, if they fulfill the requirements determined by the Department.
